A different turn was developed as a graduation project at the Willem de Kooning Academy.

The series explores woodturning as a structural design method. Where woodturning traditionally removes the original geometry of a block, this series preserves it — using the rectangular starting shape as the basis for pattern and form. The lathe doesn’t erase the block. It works against it.

This tension between the original geometry and the rotational logic of the lathe became the foundation for what would later develop into A Different Turn.

The series is presented together in a display cabinet, itself built using the same method. The cabinet doesn’t just contain the objects — it is part of the same logic.
